Horses gallop down a snow-covered main street, pulling kids on skis behind them. Daredevils launch through flaming hoops. A high school marching band plays instruments while skiing. If this sounds wild, welcome to Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival—where Western grit meets Olympic legacy in the most entertaining way possible.
The 113th edition runs February 3-8, 2026, celebrating the theme “Dream Like A Champion.” Whether you grew up hearing carnival stories or just discovered this event exists, here’s what you need to know to experience one of the West’s most authentic winter celebrations.
Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen brought his “cure for cabin fever” to Steamboat in 1914. That first year, nearly 2,000 people showed up to watch—impressive for a remote mountain town. Residents loved it so much that they made it an annual event.
Fast forward 113 years, and the tradition thrives. National Geographic ranks it among the Top 10 Winter Carnivals worldwide. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club runs the show, the same organization that has produced over 100 Olympians. This carnival funds its programs while giving locals and visitors a reason to celebrate winter in Steamboat Springs.
February 3-8, 2026, brings six days of events across downtown Lincoln Avenue and Howelsen Hill. You’ll need a $15 carnival button (available at multiple locations around town) that covers event access plus free skiing at Howelsen Hill all week.
Lincoln Avenue shuts down and transforms. Kids on skis line up behind horses, gripping ropes and trying to look brave. When those horses take off, you witness pure Colorado magic—Western ranching heritage colliding with ski culture in the best possible way. The Diamond Hitch Parade follows, with multiple skiers pulled in formation behind horses or vehicles.
Then the Steamboat Springs High School Band marches through—America’s only high school band that performs on skis. They’ve done this since 1935, and it never gets old.
Howelsen Hill hosts the main event after dark. The Lighted Man—a skier covered in fireworks—descends the mountain in a blaze of light. Professional ski jumpers launch off the historic jumps, aerial athletes flip through the night sky, and fireworks explode overhead in one of Colorado’s biggest displays. This is why people choose our bus charter/rental to attend.
Snow sculptures line the avenue—massive ice blocks transformed into art. Athletes demonstrate tricks on the airbag at Howelsen Hill. Nordic jumpers fly off the 20, 30, 45, 75, and 100-meter jumps. Family activities run daily, including the S’More Fun Party with chili, bonfires, and dancing.
Here’s the reality: Lincoln Avenue closes all weekend for street events. Highway 40 traffic reroutes through downtown on alternate streets. The city plans it well, but visitors unfamiliar with detours often circle confused while parking lots fill.
Additionally, thousands of spectators are hunting for the same limited parking spaces. Families weave through the snow, carrying chairs, blankets, and kids from distant lots. And when the evening winds down with après-carnival celebrations, someone still needs to stay sober for the drive home.
For those flying in to experience the carnival, the journey starts even earlier.
